3 Pros And Cons Of This Manchester United Legend Taking Over The Swansea City Job

Ryan Giggs

Ryan Giggs as a Swansea manager would be a gamble. That’s the only part that most people would agree with. Right now Swans struggle for points, hanging around the relegation zone, and even though it is still early in the season I don’t see much potential for things to change. And so, rumors begin to spread, analysts begin to speculate, and everybody rushes to give an opinion while the topic is still hot. I’m no different, so here are my pros and cons for Ryan Giggs as a Swansea manager.

Pros:

1. Expectations can’t be too high.

Guidolin still has some credibility, so unless there will be total humiliation of his team in one of the next several matches, Ryan will become a manager in a situation where he can’t guarantee anything. If he saves Swansea he becomes a hero, if he doesn’t you can’t really blame him. That is drastically less pressure than becoming Manchester United’s manager, especially after the last couple of seasons.

2. There isn’t a lot of competition.

For this particular managerial seat, I mean. Off the top of my head, I can’t name any potential candidates with a clear advantage over Ryan Giggs. Swansea is not the kind of team to attract big-shot managers, it has to be build from the ground floor. I believe, Giggs in that role won’t lose to anybody that Swansea can get.

3. Ryan Giggs is a long-term option.

If Ryan Giggs will be hired and succeeds, he most likely will remain with the club. Because a first-year managerial success won’t impress Premier League much. To prove yourself on that stage you have to show results year after year, and Giggs knows how to do it since his days as a player. Personally, I wish there were more long-term manager-club relationships in today’s football, so I will be rooting for Ryan Giggs to stay in Swansea as long as he can and take them to new heights.

Cons:

1. It can be a disaster that will destroy Giggs’ career.

I can’t imagine anyone employing Gary Neville as a manager of Premiere League-level team. Same thing can easily happen to Giggs. The last thing we want for him is to fail, but if so happens potential employers can decide that he’s unfit for the job when he simply wasn’t ready yet.

2. He’s inexperienced.

That one is really obvious, but what for you are going to exchange Guidolin, who throughout his career certainly faced relegation, for Giggs, who never was in this type of situation, even as a player. If ownership will decide to take that kind of risk they have to prepare to take most of the blame for it, and it is not what you want to do when you just got there.

3. All eyes will be on him.

It depends on your point of view, but I consider increased attention in case Ryan Giggs, a legend of Welsh football, becomes the new manager of Swansea a disadvantage, because his every decision will be analyzed down to the sub-atomic level. With every moment of your job studied like that, it can become the greatest distraction, when the big picture will be lost under the ever-growing pile of details.

With all that said, I think it is too early for Swansea to fire Guidolin. But if the club decides to part ways with its current manager I believe Ryan Giggs will be an excellent replacement.
