The 2017/18 season has been a wonderful season for Wolverhampton Wanderers. They have been the standout team in the Championship and may go on to break the 100-point barrier. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo along with the ownership group Fosun International has taken the club from 15th to easily making it into the Premier League with three games to spare.
Nuno has to shuffle his squad a bit as the challenges posed by the Premier League would be entirely different to that of the Championship. Here are three players who Wolves have to let go in order to free up some space in their quality squad.
Club captain Danny Batth has been with Wolves since 2009 and has been an integral part of the clubs recent history. This season, however, he has found himself on the treatment table and the bench, more often than not.
Nuno Espirito Santo seems to prefer Conor Coady, Wily Boly and Ryan Bennett above the former Sheffield Wednesday player. When he has played this season, he has looked uncomfortable in a back three, which is Nuno’s preferred system.
One of his few appearances this season came in the 4-1 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa where he made a mistake that led directly to one of Aston Villa’s goals and since then, he has found himself firmly on the Wolves bench. Wolves would do well to get rid of the 27-year-old in the summer.
The 27-year-old from Salford has found himself out on loan this season at Millwall after only making six appearances for Wolves in the league. Marshall is a solid Championship winger and has played a part in the previous season’s efforts for Wolves.
However, he is far below the level expected of a Premier League player and wasn’t a part of Nuno’s plans before. He is one player who Wolves must sell at the end of the season.
This option may be a little more far-fetched than the other examples but Helder Costa is getting to the end of his usefulness for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.
Unlike Diogo Jota, he is not the first name on the team sheet in the attacking front three for Wolves and has found himself in and out of the side this season. Considering the Premier League’s demands, Helder Costa might have to be sacrificed by Wolves for the sake of good.
