In The Budget: These Players Are Worth A Gamble And Wouldn’t Hurt Tottenham’s Bank Balance

Tottenham Hotspur have been a revelation this season and have emerged as one of the strongest contenders to finish runners-up this season behind Chelsea. Mauricio Pochettino’s side are playing an attractive brand of football with a youthful and vibrant squad and have been garnering praise from all quarters and deservedly so.

However, having crashed out from both European trophies much earlier than expected, Tottenham will be expected to improve further over the next season and fare better in the Champions League, while at the same time sustain their title challenge once again in the upcoming term. And to do that, the Lilywhites will need to add depth to their squad, which has been found lacking this term.

With involvement in Europe almost a certainty, adding depth and quality to their roster will be of paramount importance for Pochettino and Tottenham.

Here, we take a look at three players who would add value to the squad for Spurs, and at the time, are relatively cheaper in price:

Demarai Gray

The Leicester City winger has been on Tottenham’s radar for quite some time now and there is a good chance that he could end up at White Hart Lane in the summer window.

Gray hasn’t had a regular run of games with the Foxes this season, but has heavily impressed each time he has taken the field. Young, pacey and full of energy and running, the 20-year old will bring a lot of value to this Spurs squad, that have been lacking in a direct threat out on the flanks.

Given Leicester’s struggles this season and relegation on the horizon for them, the club would be willing to cash in on a player who isn’t a first-team regular and the player will also be interested in joining a Champions League club and will be available at a bargain.

Harry Maguire

Another player from a relegation threatened side, Maguire has been excellent in recent weeks for Hull City and has established himself as one of the first names, week in week out for Marco Silva’s side.

The 23-year old has caused many top-division clubs to take notice with his stand-out performances for the Tigers and has emerged as the leader of the defence in the absence of Curtis Davies. Standing tall at a daunting 188cm, Maguire can be an intimidating presence for strikers to deal with and is a potent weapon to possess during set-pieces. Strong in tackling and equally good with the ball at his feet, Maguire could prove to be the perfect signing for Tottenham.

According to reports of late, Tottenham have developed an interest in the defender and have been linked with a £15 million bid for Maguire in the summer. At that price, given his age and the potential that he has shown, along with his homegrown status, Maguire could prove to be quite a steal.

Karol Linetty

The 22-year old has been on Tottenham’s radar since 2014 when he was a player for Lech Poznan in Poland and his stock has risen ever since, before he moved to Italian side Sampdoria in the summer of 2016. But according to reports, Spurs are monitoring him again, along with Premier League rivals Everton ahead of the summer window.

Linetty is an old-fashioned box-to-box midfielder, an all-action presence in the middle of the park always on the press to close down opponents, breaking up play with tackles and interceptions and getting attacks started from the midfield. A smart operator, he has great positional awareness and also possesses a decent turn of pace that helps him cover ground swiftly.

Averaging three tackles per 90 minutes – better than the Spurs’ midfield duo of Moussa Dembele and Victor Wanyama, and having notched up three assists for Sampdoria, Linetty has given a good account of himself and looks like a perfect fit to the Tottenham midfield and will be available for a bargain.

Linetty would be a shrewd signing by Tottenham.
