3 key positions Burnley must strengthen in January

With a 3-0 loss to Sheffield United last week, Burnley have slipped to 14th position in the Premier League. Sean Dyche’s men had no clue about their display against Sheffield. Winning just 3 in their 11 games in the league, Burnley have concerns regarding their position at the end of the season.

However, with injuries to key players and limited backup, the Clarets must find solutions to three key positions, and have to strengthen their squad.

Let’s take a look at the three areas where Sean Dyches has to bring in reinforcements to end the season on a higher note.

Left-back

Burnley have just two left-backs at their disposal right now. Erik Pieters was brought in this summer from Stoke City to fill the void. He has started in all the games for the Clarets this season, while Charlie Taylor has been coming off the bench.

The two left-backs have just 3 assists between them so far, and all three have been produced by Pieters. Taylor is yet to start a game for the Clarets and they have to strengthen the left-back position.

Right-back

Just like the situation at left-back, Burnley have limited options at right-back too. Matthew Lowton and Phil Bardsley are the only options available in this position. While Lowton has played every possible minute, Phil Bardsley is yet to get his chance.

An injury to any of these players can put Sean Dyche in a difficult situation. Considering Bardsley’s age, nothing much can be expected from him. Lowton is probably the only choice Dyche can look to and any setback can leave him with almost no player available to cover at right-back.

Midfield

Burnley’s key issues have been the lack of depth in their midfield. Injury to Danny Drinkwater has kept him out of action for a long time. Jack Cork is another player who has been in and out of the team because of his own injury concerns.

Sean Dyche has just a few established players to control the game in the middle. Ashley Westwood and Jeff Hendricks have been constant for Burnley. The lack of depth in the midfield can affect their progress in the league.

Conclusion

Thus, the Clarets have to make a move this January to strengthen these three key positions if they are to finish in the top half of the table this season.
