Fullbacks in the English Premier League aren’t only responsible for and limited to guiding the flanks of their defences, they are also often a larger part of the attack, as they offer a lot of offensive cover to the wingers while creating chances for the forwards via their crosses.

A solid right-back or left-back can win games for his side, and it’s the secret the likes of Tottenham, Everton, Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea have used well to their advantages in recent seasons.

As the tough battle for the top flight prize continues with Chelsea looking to have sealed the title win with a victory over Arsenal on Saturday, one of Conte’s players solidified his stake as the best in the aforementioned position(s) in the Premier League with his brilliant performance against the Gunners.

The tone for total victory over Wenger’s charges was set in the 13th minute when Marcos Alonso rose higher than Bellerin to head in a Costa’s effort that had struck the bar, with a stiff challenge that ruled the 21-year-old Arsenal right-back out of the remainder of the game.

The goal was Alonso’s 4th in the Premier League for the season, and he has now found the back of the net thrice in his last 4 appearances for the Blues.

The left-back made his EPL debut for Chelsea against Arsenal back in September as a left wingback after Conte switched to the great 3-4-3 formation in the second half of that 3-nil defeat, and there is no arguing that the 26-year-old has been the best in his position across the division in 2016-17.

His £24million arrival for a 5-year contract in the summer wasn’t heralded much, as the former Fiorentina man didn’t look capable of adding anything to a Blues defence that had fallen badly apart in last season’s woeful campaign.

His earlier stints in the Premier League with Bolton Wanderers and Sunderland weren’t particularly impressive too, and that he was even never considered good enough for Real Madrid’s first team after spending years progressing through the academy and youth teams rank didn’t do well to boost his C.V.

However, his transformation under Conte has been more than commendable, and it is why he has started every of the club’s last 18 league games. Alonso has combined the defensive and offensive duties that come with being a wing-back perfectly well, and he has since doubled perfectly as a left-back and left winger for Chelsea.

The Spaniard has created 2 assists and 16 other goalscoring chances since his arrival from Serie A last summer, while by attempting 1.5 shots per game, 9 of his attempted 19 shots on goal has hit the target. He has completed 75% of his passes and completed 10 of 19 attempted dribbles.

At the back and averaging 5 defensive actions per game, Alonso has won 24 tackles, made 31 interceptions, 66 clearances, 2 blocks and won 44 out of 75 headed duels.

He has become very crucial to Chelsea’s total dominance that has seen them swept off opponents every other matchday except twice ( the loss to Tottenham and draw against Liverpool ) ever since he got into the starting XI, and without a doubt, he is the best left-back in the league.
