The season might end with a bit of a damp squib for Liverpool as the home loss to Manchester United could have effectively ended their quest for a top 4 place. Steven Gerrard is leaving the club at the end of the season and Liverpool desperately need a player who can come in place of Gerrard and provide them some robustness in midfield, he cannot replace Gerrard for sure but needs to be a world class player who can hit the ground running in the midfield of Liverpool.
Liverpool will be buoyant of news coming from Italy that one of the top midfielders from the Serie A is willing to leave his club and Liverpool are in the race to sign the player. Miralem Pjanic, the Roma midfielder is ready to move to Liverpool, based on reports and this would be a huge coup for the Anfield club if they can sign the player.
A proper deep lying playmaker
Pjanic has played well for Roma for the past couple of months but with no real silverware to show for it. The Rome club have been in the shadow of Juventus, but this season has been rather poor in the second half from the club. Pjanic though is a star already and at only 24 years of age, him moving to Liverpool would be a great move not only for him but for the club as well.
He has scored thrice this season and has also provided 6 assist for the Rome club but apart from him being young and versatile, it is his playmaking ability that will remind a lot of Liverpool fans of a Gerrard who could ping balls from all around the field. Gerrard did not always have the best passing range but grew into it and his best season probably was last year when he was playing the quarterback role.
That is something that Pjanic is known for doing, he can start attacks from the back by spraying passes and quickening up the pace of the attack as well. One thing that people might not know about Pjanic is that he is very good with the ball at his feet and he can run with the ball, so he has the ability to link with the attack as well, if he needs to.
Another aspect of his game which really pushes him into the best midfielder in Italy territory is that he is great at taking set pieces and direct free kicks. Delivery of the ball is something that he is brilliant at and Liverpool fans would love to have him there. The one downside to his game is his tackling ability which is pretty lax, but he isn’t going to be the tackler in the team that could go to Lucas or Henderson.
Pjanic would cost a bomb to sign, but Liverpool need to spend money to get the best players at a club which might not get Champions League football next season, maybe a couple of good signings like Pjanic could get them Premier League glory? Who knows?
