Three Free Agents Who Newcastle United Can Target In The Summer

After bearing a stuttering end to the 2015-16 campaign, Newcastle United were, against their quality, relegated to the second division. For a side that was capable of upsetting the biggest of teams and finishing in the top half of the table, it was a bitter pill to swallow. The biggest plus points were that of the willingness of popular boss Rafa Benitez to remain at St. James’ Park and the signing of match winners like Matt Ritchie.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea coach brought about a sense of belief and trust among his players and brought them back to where they belong, the Premier League. Now, they are amidst a red-hot relegation battle, which includes ten teams in it, who are all under the impression of facing the drop. Thankfully, the Magpies are in 13th place, 4 points ahead of 18th seeded Southampton and 4 behind Bournemouth, who are the last team in the top half.

To strengthen their hopes of establishing a squad capable of soaking the PL pressure, here are three free agents they could add for a minimum amount. They must focus on areas where boots are yet to be filled, also to replace sub-standard players in that particular position.

Jack Wilshere

Wilshere is right up there with one of the best and on his day, he can silently kill any side’s defence. He is one of the most intelligent players around and since returning from a series of injuries, he has made his way back into the Arsenal first-team.

In the second half of this season, the £90,000-a-week midfielder has created chances for Arsenal, been a real dictator in the middle and has split opposition defences with his quick passing and accurate through balls.

For Newcastle, Ayoze Perez has worked hard but has been too hot and cold at times. His finishing has been below par and more often than not, the midfielder has struggled to play the key passes or find his way through a back line. Hence, undoubtedly, Jack Wilshere would be a real upgrade in the No.10 spot.

James McArthur

Rafa has tinkered with his midfield many a time this season and no player has seemed like occupying a starting spot permanently, alongside Jonjo Shelvey. After experimenting with Diame, Mikel Merino and Isaac Hayden, it’s time the Magpies offload one of them and include a more hardworking James McArthur.

The midfielder runs the midfield, blocks channels and takes opposition midfielders out of the equation by excellently tracking them. McArthur’s ability to direct the play, orchestrate the attack and be composed on the ball could prove to be handy elements for Newcastle next season if they manage to land him. Also to mention, the 30-year-old’s movement into the box, including his disguised runs, is a fine goalscoring asset to have.

Robert Huth

Despite being 33 years old, Robert Huth is a complete defensive package with the perfect winning mentality, just how he led Leicester City to the Premier League title in 2015-16. Huth is robust, strong in the air and can shrug strikers away in one-vs-one situations.

His biggest attribute is man marking, especially during set-piece situations. Huth may not be the quickest of centre-backs around but the German senses danger earlier than many others and can cover a lot of ground too. His combination with captain Lascelles might turn out to become a loud voice from the defence. He also brings in a huge amount of experience.
