Manchester United recently signed Jose Mourinho, who was expected to bring about change. Not just in the tactics, but in the squad and the mind-set of the players. Some of the players were not performing up to their potential, while others were being used as bench-warmers by former boss Louis van Gaal. Though the Red Devils did manage to win the FA Cup title, they were not too convincing right through the season overall and eventually the Dutch manager was sacked.
However, moving on now the main concern for the ex Real Madrid and Chelsea boss would be how he wants to convert this decent side into a Premier League title winning one. New players will be expected to come in and some of the stars at the club might also possibly leave.
Here are three forgotten United players below, who could possibly be sold by Mourinho this summer, as they might not fit into his plans at Old Trafford for the upcoming campaign:
3. James Wilson:
The England U-20 and U-21 international has just made 15 league appearances for United’s first team and has scored thrice for them, since making his debut back in 2014. The striker has been on loan at Championship side Brighton and Hove Albion since 2015, for some regular football. However, the signing of Anthony Martial last summer and the discovery of a new young talent, in the form of Marcus Rashford would not be giving him any hope of more chances to showcase his talent for the club.
Further, it is understood that Mourinho might look to sign yet another striker soon, with a host of attackers being linked with the Manchester based side. If that happens, the number of chances for the Englishman would reduce even further, though Martial has been playing on the wings in recent times and doing well. Wilson was not recalled in January when the club really lost quite a few players up front and could possibly consider leaving the club, if things remain the same under the new boss.
2. Guillermo Varela:
The right-back has failed to impress at Manchester and has barely made four league appearances for the club since joining them back in 2013. The Uruguayan defender was on loan with the Real Madrid B side between 2014-2015 and played much more football in Spain, than what he received at The Theater of Dreams in his early days. He is still just 23 years old and wants to join some club which actually need him, as Mourinho has Matteo Darmian and Antonio Valencia to play on the right side of his defence. It was previously confirmed that the player could be axed by the new boss and if the claims are true, he just might be sold this summer.
1. Sergio Romero:
The Argentine international was actually brought in as a backup keeper in case the preferred first choice David de Gea would leave United. However, that did not happen and the 29 year goalie was left merely a spectator. There have been some rumours of a possible exit, though recent reports suggest that the former Sampdoria man wants to stay and fight for a place in the starting eleven, with Mourinho taking over from Van Gaal. If that is true, it will be interesting to see what the Portuguese manager decides about his future, after former Barcelona man Victor Valdes was recently released by the club. As of now, a potential exit could be on the cards if he is once again made to play second fiddle to the Spaniard.
