Chelsea succumbed to a humiliating defeat against Tottenham and conceded more than 4 goals in the league for the first time against Jose Mourinho. After the game serious questions were raised about the Chelsea defence, a defence which started off so well in the season finally seems to be going off the rails with Gary Cahill and John Terry having quite a disastrous day for the Blues.
Without making it a knee jerk assessment, it might be time to think about replacements in the Chelsea defence, while Terry, Cahill and Zouma are not the worst defenders in the league, they are not the force that people would expect them to be and with the transfer window open it might be time for Jose to splash the cash once again and sign some players, here we look at 3 defenders who can help Chelsea in the title race.
1. Mats Hummels
Mats HummelsChelsea don’t really need an overhaul of their defence, they just need a couple of heads in the team who can challenge the likes of Cahill and Terry for a starting place and Hummels fits the bill in every term. Hummels has not had the best of seasons for Dortmund but the team itself has not been playing well and there have always been rumours of Hummels moving away from the Bundesliga club as long as they get a good deal for him.
Chelsea have the money to buy the defender and signing him up could be the one step to ensure they fix their central defensive pairing.
2. Gregory Van der Wiel
One priority for Chelsea should be to ensure that they get another quality right back in. Ivanovic might be doing a good job but in reality he is a centre back and should play more games in that position for Chelsea. Getting a quality right back is not easy but there are a couple of options out there with Van der Wiel is one such player who fits all the bills for Chelsea.
The Dutch defender is currently at PSG and Chelsea would have to spend quite a bit to bring in the defender from Paris but when Jose wants something he does get it and Van der Wiel does have the talent to succeed in the Premier League.
3. Dani Carvajal
The 22 year old Spanish right back could be another option for Chelsea but he might be a much more expensive signing that the other 2 players in the list. As Ivanovic would be a better fit in the centre of defence, getting the right back would be ideal for the Chelsea team. The Spanish right back is excellent in his attacking play but is a little suspect in his defensive abilities but that is nothing that Jose Mourinho could not fix, of course bringing Carvajal from Real Madrid would take some doing but then again he sold David Luiz for £50 million, so you never know.
