3 Big Inferences Made From Jose Mourinho’s Press Conference And How Twitter Reacted To It

Mourinho

Jose Mourinho and Manchester United surely know how to make an impact even before the Premier League season starts. In between the rest days of Euro 2016, the Manchester United team had a press conference, which was live streamed as well as they saw the former Real Madrid, Chelsea and Inter Milan manager speak to the press for the very first time.

Mourinho did have a lot to say about his new role in his new surroundings, not only that, he will also have a few more signings to talk about as the club have already made three big profile signings in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Eric Bailly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Manchester United fans would finally be happy with their new manager, at least some of them and he did have a lot to say about his new team. Here are the three biggest inferences that can be made from his incredible press conference.

Champions League is the minimum requirement

The fact that Manchester United aren’t playing in the Champions League this season is a bit of a downer. They might not have performed well last season but certainly a club of Manchester United’s size needs to be in the European competition that everyone wants to be part off.

Mourinho wants to ensure that United are in that position but he was quick to also say that the players need to aim higher and anything less than fourth place would be a disappointment for the record Premier League champions.

“Man United is a Champions League club and we have to make sure that in July 2017, instead of going for the Europa League play-offs and then the group draw, we [are] where this club has to be, which is the Champions League.”

“I don’t want the players to think we have to do better and finish fourth. Finishing fourth is not the aim.”

Rooney will not play in midfield

Wayne Rooney

One of biggest gripes that not only Manchester United fans had but also England fans confused was playing Wayne Rooney in the centre of the park. Rooney might not be the most dynamic player anymore and also his pace might have gone but that does not mean that he cannot play as a striker.

Mourinho did ensure that Rooney would not play in the heart of midfield, though he was a little cryptic about naming the England captain but fans should be pleased to hear that Rooney wouldn’t be saddled with creating openings for United and would rather be spending time scoring goals next season.

“It is normal that a player changes a bit but there is something that will never change, which is the natural appetite to put the ball in the net. Maybe he is not a striker, not a No. 9 anymore but for me he will never be a No. 6, playing 50 metres from the goal.”

More signings are coming

With three big names already in, you would imagine that Mourinho would calm the spending spree and look to work with what he has but the Portuguese manager didn’t say that he was going to stop and he did reveal that a few more players are to come to United before the end of the transfer window.

United already brought in a striker, attacking midfielder and a central defender, could it be time to bring in another goalkeeper or a defensive midfielder?

“We made a nucleus of four priorities – four positions to give a certain balance to the squad, to give a certain push in terms of quality and the qualities I need and want.”

Whatever happens, Manchester United are going to have a fun season more than anything else and it will be a ride to see just where they will finish next season. Mourinho has set the ball rolling and we cannot wait for the upcoming season to begin.
