A tale of two Real Madrid strikers, one, who continues to play for the white of Madrid while another who left the club for more opportunities and a new challenge, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain are two stories which everyone tracks and for some reason they are always linked with a move away from their respective clubs, no matter what time of the season it is.
While everyone remembers Higuain for his misses in the important games, he still is one of the best out and out strikers in the game. Benzema also isn’t the worst striker out there and you would be hard-pressed to find someone who has been regularly banging in the goals in the same manner as the Frenchman. We take the help of Squawka.com and figure out who is the better player amongst the strikers.
Argentina vs. France: Who is the better attacker?
We would only be comparing the average scores per game for each player as they have not played the same number of games in their leagues. Benzema played 29 games for Real Madrid while Higuain played in 37 games for Napoli last year.
Even with the increased number of games, Higuain could only score 23.75 in the attack score compared to the 29.33 from Benzema.
And when it comes to passing the ball around, Benzema is ahead of the Argentine. Benzema averaged 0.34 assists per game last season while Higuain only averaged 0.22 assists per game. Even in the chances created it is Benzema who is ahead of Gonzalo with 1.52 chances created per game while Higuain only creates 1.30 chances per game.
While Benzema is a better team player, it seems, he also has the better goal scoring record, just about. The Frenchman averaged 0.52 goals per game last season while Higuain averaged 0.49 goals per game for Napoli. However, Higuain did have the greater shooting accuracy between the two. The Argentine hit the target with 58% of his shots compared to 53% for Benzema.
That stat is the only one where Higuain dominates Benzema, the Frenchman is a better player with the ball as well, he had a success take-on rate of 57% last season compared to just 29% for Higuain. The same story is also for the aerial duels, we would expect Gonzalo to lead in this regard but Benzema tops the Argentine by winning 49% of all his aerial duels compared to just 26% for the World Cup runner up.
It seems that Benzema is the better all-around player compared to Higuain and has the stats and goals to prove it. No wonder Real Madrid kept him and were more than happy to release Gonzalo.
