26 Goals In 74 Games: Scouting Liverpool’s Latest Target – Breel Embolo

Breel Embolo Scout Report

Liverpool seem to be continuing their ways of getting young players into their team. While Brendan Rodgers and Rafa Benitez did do their bit in bringing some really talented youngster who have done pretty well, it seems that Jurgen Klopp is doing his bit and the club have targeted the Basel forward Breel Embolo.

The 18-year-old was born in Cameroon, but his family moved to Switzerland when he was just six years old and he hasn’t looked back since. The youngster was moved to the youth system in Basel in 2010 and things just picked up for him. He won a couple of championships with the U16 team before making his debut for the senior squad last season.

The youngster already has 74 appearances for the Swiss club and has scored 26 times for them so far. Liverpool aren’t the only top club in Europe for the youngster, but they seem to have made a move for the 18-year-old.

Style of play: An upgrade to Balotelli?

Embolo was named as the Swiss Rookie of the year last season and has cited Mario Balotelli as a hero that he tries to emulate, but that couldn’t be any different when it comes to how he performs on the pitch.

Embolo is seen as the perfect centre-forward, he has pace, strength and great finishing as well. He loves playing off the last defender’s shoulder and is known to make great runs as well. Even though Embolo is built physically well and is tall, he can dribble the ball comfortably and can get out of any troublesome situations.

Embolo also has the ability to chest the ball down and then turn the defender around. The forward isn’t just a brute in the attack, he has great movement off the ball also, again a massive plus for a team, and this allows his teammates to find a lot of space to exploit, something that many top strikers don’t do regularly.

He prefers to play out as a striker but can play on the wing as well, his dribbling and pace coming to great effect in this position. There is one major flaw in his game, which is the same for almost every young player and that is he often goes missing in the big games but that can be remedied when he plays a lot of games, he still is only 18-years-old.

The future for the bright star

Embolo is still young and has a lot of time on his hands to develop and become the striker that he dreams of becoming. Pace, strength and movement are all present at the moment and that can only get better over time. The Swiss forward has a pick of teams to choose from if he does decide to move away from Basel and that could well start a bidding war where Basel get any price they quote for the 18-year-old.
