26 big chances missed – It is high time Chelsea get rid of this £70m flop and seek reinforcements

Why Chelsea should offload Alvaro Morata and sign a new striker

Chelsea have made a good start to life under Maurizio Sarri. They are currently 4th in the table, just 10 points behind the best team in the land, Manchester City. Not only that, they are doing well in cup competitions as well, winning all the five group games in the Europa League and having progressed into the quarter-final of the EFL Cup.

However, there is a grave area of concern for the Blues in the attacking department. Eden Hazard, Willian and Pedro are doing a good job as wide forwards but the two strikers have struggled to contribute much in terms of goal on a regular basis.

Alvaro Morata

Alvaro Morata was bought in the 2017 summer for a whopping £70m from Real Madrid to cover up the loss of Diego Costa. Unfortunately, the former has done anything but. Here’s why it is time for Chelsea to offload the 26-year-old during the summer transfer window:

Chelsea’s need of a potent goal-scorer

Ever since joining Chelsea last summer, Morata has netted 22 goals in 67 appearances at an average of a goal every three games in all competitions. That is just not good enough for a top-class striker who was bought to replace a player who helped the team win the Premier League in 2017. Furthermore, the amount of big chances the Spaniard has missed is astonishing, to say the least.

As per the stats, the 26-year-old has missed 26 big chances in the Premier League so far. Hence, it is pretty clear that the striker has a problem when it comes to finishing chances on a consistent basis. (Stats Courtesy – PremierLeague.com)

Maurizio Sarri

Having appointed Sarri in the summer and spending big on Kepa and Jorginho, Chelsea have signalled their intentions on closing the gap between them and Manchester City. However, that needs a difference-maker up top for the Blues. Hence, they cannot let Morata squander big chances in the future; they need someone who can score 20+ goals in a league season.

For that reason, they must offload the player in the summer window and buy a new striker to get closer to the Cityzens during the 2019/20 season. From the 26-year-old’s viewpoint, it will make sense for him to leave Stamford Bridge in order to play elsewhere and gain confidence.

It seems as if the pressure of playing for one of the biggest clubs in such a highly intense league has taken a toll on the forward. Thus, all parties would benefit if Morata parts ways from Chelsea next summer.
