The latest player to be linked with Liverpool is Mattia De Sciglio, with the Reds still looking for a replacement for out-of-favor left back Alberto Moreno. Jurgen Klopp is looking to bolster his defense before the new campaign starts and Mattia De Sciglio is at the top of his wish list. Liverpool need an urgent replacement for Alberto Moreno as the Spaniard is highly error prone. Throughout the transfer window, Liverpool were linked with a list of full backs, which includes the likes of Jonas Hector, Ben Chilwell and many more. Mattia De Sciglio, AC Milan’s left back is the latest addition to this list. Jurgen Klopp seems eager for the Italian left back, but the question is: Who is Mattia De Sciglio and what will he bring to Liverpool?
Mattia De Sciglio, a native of Milan, joined AC Milan at the age of ten and spent nine seasons in the Milan club’s youth system. In 2010, he joined AC Milan’s U20 squad and won the Coppa Italia Primavera with the club. He made his senior team debut in the 2011-12 season and since then, he has impressed with his performances in the league. Last season though, De Sciglio had injury issues which meant he could manage only 29 appearances throughout the season. This was less compared to his earlier seasons in the first team.
Coming to De Sciglio’s style of play, he can play at both the full back positions. He can also play as a right attacking winger and is a versatile player. De Sciglio is primarily a right-sided full back who can play comfortably also on the left side due to his ability with his left foot. Former Milan player Alberigo Evani, who coached him in the 2007-08 season, described De Sciglio as “a fast runner, with good technique”, and also as “a versatile footballer”. De Sciglio obliges to his attacking as well as defensive duties equally well. His managers have praised him for his maturity and composure, both when attacking and defending. The problem with Alberto Moreno is that he cannot defend well. Liverpool need someone who can defend well too.
De Sciglio is known to deliver in good crosses for his teammates and his ability to deliver with both his feet makes him a threatening player in the wings. He is also good at playing key passes. He can create many chances and with a proper, “hungry for goals” striker, the team he plays for can expect goals. He is a pacey winger and can make darting runs into the opposition defenses. De Sciglio brings stability to the defense too. His timing if the tackles is more than good and with his pace he can track runs of opposition players. His performances have made people think of him as Milan’s former right back Mauro Tassotti. He is a talented player and under Klopp, he will have his best years.
Liverpool need to replace Alberto Moreno if they want to fight for the top-4 next season. Matia De Sciglio is a good option for Klopp and signing him would strengthen the defense. Klopp should go for the 23-year-old Italian full back.
