Who Is This 22-year Old Argentine That Liverpool Are Trying To Sign? Everything You Need To Know

Liverpool might still not be done with the transfer window, the Reds might have brought in Marko Grujic for the midfield but the Premier League side are being linked with a move for Leandro Paredes of Roma.

The Argentine had actually spent last year on loan at Empoli and it seems that he is not going to be part of Roma’s plans for the near future. The midfielder had started his career playing for Boca Juniors in his native country but it seems that he is going to be involved in a tug of war between the Reds and Ligue 1 side Monaco.

Liverpool do have money to spend and that can be hiked up a bit if they do get rid of Christian Benteke but just who is this player?

A defensive midfielder who likes to tackle

Paredes is just 22-years of age but he is one of the rising stars in Serie A. It does come as a surprise that AS Roma are willing to let go of the youngster but he could be the kind of player that fixes their problems in midfield.

What the Premier League side lack is a proper midfield destroyer, somewhat like a Nemanja Matic, well a Matic during his prime and Paredes can provide that to the club. The Argentine had initially moved to Chievo Verona in 2014 on loan from Boca Juniors and then made a move on loan to Roma as well.

The Serie A club from the capital signed him on a permanent deal but sent him out on loan to Empoli where he flourished for the side. The youngster is a defensive midfielder but can play a little advanced also; he is not an attacking player in any way shape or form but can provide a lot of cover to the defence, something that Liverpool could do with next season.

The Reds currently have only Emre Can and Marko Grujic who can be somehow shoehorned into a defensive role but both players are box-to-box midfielders and the side does need some help covering this area of the team.

Paredes played 33 games in Serie A last season and averages 2.5 tackles per game along with 1.5 interceptions per game, not bad for someone just learning his trade in a new country. The Argentine is known for his inch-perfect passing, which should help a lot of the counter-attacks that Liverpool do launch this season.

The former Boca Juniors star is also known for his tackling ability, something that Liverpool could really do with. He is also known for his long distance shooting and did notch up a couple of goals in the league campaign for Empoli last season but he prefers to sit deep and then make his move.

Paredes has a great ability to read the opposition as well and that is something you don’t expect from young players but the Argentine has a knack of intercepting the ball.

Liverpool are thin in this area and Paredes could become a start for the club. Currently, he is involved in a tug of war between Liverpool and Monaco but one thing is a given, if he does sign for the Premier League side, he would be playing for one of the most energetic and smart managers in the world and that would only mean good news for him and Liverpool fans.
