Wolves are walking towards the Premier League. They currently sit 13 points above the third position and although they are battling with Cardiff City for the title, the club can effectively begin to plan for next season in the top-flight of English Football. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo will want to strengthen their side ahead of a campaign that will be very different to the one that they have just undertaken.
They will not be able to dominate the Premier League and will have to defend a lot more and will not be able to control the midfield as much as they have done in the Championship. So to cope with the demands of the Premier League, Nuno might look for different types of players than the ones he has at the club already, and there may be some free agent options available to him to choose the kind of players to suit his requirements.
Although John Ruddy is a quality keeper, the competition for the number one jersey early in the season can be a healthy thing. Willy Caballero has played for two of the top teams in Europe, Manchester City and Chelsea, and would add class and quality to a team that is looking to impress when they make it to the promised land.
Caballero has been unlucky in some respects; he has faced stiff competition for the number one spot against truly outstanding international keepers and Claudio Bravo but he could do a very useful job for Wolves once his contract runs out at Chelsea this summer.
The nippy Fulham full-back has been at the heart of most of the good attacking play that has propelled Fulham into the promotion picture this season. However, the 25-year-old is out of contract this summer and Fulham may struggle to hold on to a player who has performed brilliantly in the second half of the season.
His pace, trickery and delivery very much suit Nuno Espirito Santo’s style of play and Ryan Fredericks would slot into the Wolves team with ease.
There may be a question about whether he can play as a wing-back, having played most of this season as a full-back but the confidence of the player would currently be sky high and a move to a Premier League team under a tactically clever manager like Nuno Espirito Santo would mean that Fredericks would quickly pick up the skills needed to play in that position.
He was linked with a move away in January but if Wolves could pick him up for free it would be a very good piece of business.
