By the standards set in recent years, Leeds United have had an excellent season so far. Safely ensconced in the play-off places, 8 points ahead of 7th placed Fulham, Garry Monk’s men are flying after a 2-0 win against title-chasing Brighton this month as part of a 7-match unbeaten run.
The fans, however, have more than the obvious reasons to hope their side manages promotion to the top flight. Leeds now have some pretty hot properties in their squad, players being watched by those at higher levels. Leeds will have a chance of keeping hold of their best should they go up, but anything other than elevation to the Premier League will most likely lead to certain players considering their time up at Elland Road and, to be honest, you couldn’t blame them.
Pontus Jansson, Kyle Bartley, Luke Ayling and Chris Wood are all big contributors who are still of an age to be thought of as not yet at their peak. For me though, two players really stand out.
CHARLIE TAYLOR
The local (ish) lad, from York, is turning into a top quality left-back. He was the subject of heavy interest from current Championship pace-setters Newcastle United and will no doubt still be on their radar come the summer, regardless of what division they are in. Taylor’s performances this season haven’t simply been impressive for a 23-year-old, he has been one of Leeds’ best player full stop. As is the modern way, his ability going forward is just as important to his admirers as his ability to defend and there’s no question that ability comes in abundance. It wouldn’t surprise me to be talking about Charlie Taylor the England left-back in a few months time, so Leeds will have to go up if he’s to be doing it as their player.
KEMAR ROOFE
The lad from Walsall is another big improver and one destined for top flight football. Right-footed but capable of playing right across the front line, this quick, agile and adaptable player is already being touted as yet another ‘future England great’. I hate those tags being given out so wantonly, but it seems in Roofe’s case he’s done plenty on the pitch to deserve it and, much like Taylor, he is one of Leeds’ better players regardless of age so it isn’t simply about potential. Kemar Roofe’s ability is very real and very now, a definite improvement to most Premier League clubs and so big money will most likely be coming Leeds United’s way this summer.
