2 players Southampton can loan out before the deadline including 23-year-old academy star

Two players Southampton can loan out this summer

Southampton have had a strange transfer window so far. They have brought in most of their targets but are not able to offload the players that Mark Hughes doesn’t want in the first-team. The likes of Danny Ings, Jannik Vestergaard, Angus Gunn and Mohamed Elyounoussi have strengthened the squad but these new signings have also pushed the fringe players further away from the first-team.

These are the young players that need regular minutes for their development but the arrival of big names has made it impossible for them to compete for first-team places.

Sam Gallagher

The 22-year-old striker was behind the likes of Gabbiadini, Austin, and Long in the pecking order of strikers at the club. But after the arrival of Danny Ings from Liverpool on the transfer deadline day, he has been pushed back even further from the first-team.

The youngster had spent the last season on loan at Birmingham City but could only muster up 6 goals in 23 starts. His most potent season so far has been for Blackburn Rovers where he played a whopping 43 matches in the 2016/17 season and scored 11 goals. These numbers in the Championship are really impressive for a young player who needs opportunities for his growth.

According to reports in The Sun, Gallagher is wanted by Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield United. In fact, Stoke City wanted the player on a permanent basis but Saints didn’t allow the move to go through as they believe there is just too much potential in Gallagher to let him leave on a permanent basis.

A loan move to Ewood Park could be a win-win situation for all parties involved as it allows Gallagher to return to the surroundings where he has enjoyed success in the past and also allow Southampton to have a close look at him and his development in the Championship.

Harrison Reed

Harrison Reed is yet another player who rose through the ranks of the fabled Saints academy but has failed to get into the first-team. The 23-year-old spent last season at Norwich City on loan where he impressed in both central midfield and at right-back. He started 36 games for the Canaries, scoring once and assisting thrice.

According to recent reports, Leeds United are interested in the youngster as they look for more options in their midfield. After four round of fixtures, Leeds are at the top of the table with 3 wins and a draw but their star midfielder Kalvin Phillips has started all the games of the season so far.

It is a long hard season in the Championship and the arrival of the energetic Reed would give Leeds some much-needed depth in the midfield and he will get the minutes needed for his development too.

At the St.Mary’s, it’s quite difficult for him to get into the first-team over the likes of Oriol Romeu, Stuart Armstrong, James Ward-Prowse and Mario Lamina. The move to Leeds United could be a match made in heaven between the club and the player.
