Two missed summer transfer targets Manchester United should sign in January

With the summer transfer window shutting earlier than usual, Premier League clubs, including Manchester United missed out on many of their top targets. The Red Devils were able to sign just three players, out of which only Fred has appeared in the four games played thus far.

The lack of new signings has resulted in his team’s poor start to the season. Jose Mourinho’s men lost back-to-back games against Brighton and Tottenham Hotspur, before restoring some parity by beating Burnley.

Manchester United’s business in the summer was not satisfactory and they failed to strengthen their areas of weakness.

With the squad looking a bit out of depth, probably due to the lack of confidence, here are two missed summer targets they should sign in January to restore some belief.

Toby Alderweireld (Tottenham Hotspur)

Jose Mourinho needed a centre-back all summer and the board’s failure to land one has proven disastrous so far. United have conceded seven goals in four games, which tells you the whole story about the current centre-backs in action for the Red Devils.

The club needs a leader at the back, someone who can organise a defence and be counted. Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, who as per the Metro had interested United, is known for his communication skills and leadership.

The Belgian, who was rated by Spurs at £60m, reading of the game, along with his intelligent positioning while defending a dangerous attack is something imperious. He has an accurate passing rate from the back to top it off.

United should be devastated that they couldn’t sign the player this summer. But nonetheless, they could try bagging the Belgian’s signature in January as his Tottenham contract expires next summer.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (Lazio)

According to Calciomercato, Manchester United were interested in Lazio ace Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. However, a deal never materialised and the Serbian stayed put at Lazio.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

Come January, the Red Devils should reignite their interest in the 6ft 3in attacking midfielder. The 23-year-old is one of the most coveted creative midfielders in Europe. United should swoop in to bring the player to Old Trafford this winter.

Some of his attributes are impressive – being strong, powerful and direct with the ball. Milinkovic-Savic is a gem of a player when in possession. He could aid Paul Pogba and Fred by creating goalscoring opportunities himself. He’s also an excellent ball-carrier and doesn’t shirk in his defensive duties, which would no doubt appeal to Mourinho.
