2 Marquee Signings Who Can Help Manchester United To Comeback Stronger

Manchester United and their defensive woes are inseparable. Just after showing some kind of promise against City the other night, now United are without the services of yet another defender. Marcos Rojo is out with an injury and it seems like he will now be out for sometime, giving van Gaal yet another headache.

While United brought in a host of offensive players in the summer transfer window, they overlooked their defence. The club did not plan well and could never replace the outgoing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. Thus they had to adjust with youngsters like Blackett and with left backs like Rojo playing in the cenre of the defence.

But if United are to do well for the future, this scenario must change and they should look to get proper defenders who can do well in the Premier League. Till then it will be hard for United to challenge for the biggest of honours even with such world class players in their side, namely di Maria, Falcao, van Persie, Rooney and Mata. Here we give the names of two such defenders who United should try to pursue in the January transfer window to salvage their season and get into the top four.

Ron Vlaar:

He is already accustomed with van Gaal at Netherlands and his performance for the national team in the recently concluded Brazil World Cup was applauded by one and all. He will be a quick solution for United as he knows the Premier League out and out having played for Aston Villa. Vlaar has all the traits of being a success at United with his physicality and his towering presence in the back of the United line. He could be an instant hit at United and one who would give their defence with the required rigidity. But many may argue that Vlaar is already 29 and would not be a long term solution for United. But on the hindsight Vlaar is in a tussle with Villa regarding his contract and thus United can get him for a lesser price if they pursue him hard. Vlaar is valued at £12 million by Villa, but reports suggest that United are plotting a cut price deal and would not reach out to Villa’s valuation.

Mats Hummels:

The German defender has had a wonderful World Cup that earned him a new contract with his side Borussia Dortmund. He is already one of the best defenders in the world and at 25 he may only improve. United would have a top player in him if they manage to get him in January. Van Gaal did go after him in the summer, but then he was happy in Germany and thus refused a move. But Dortmund’s rough patch in the league may just change his mind and in January he may be looking for a new challenge, something which United should look to capitalize upon. But Hummels would need a huge transfer fee, possibly in the region of £30 million, but as we know United, when was money a problem for them?
