2 goals, 2 assists – Norwich signing this impressive Bundesliga star would be terrific

Why Norwich City should plot a January swoop for Elvis Rexhbecaj

Back in May, German newspaper Bild (h/t The Daily Star) had claimed that Norwich City were interested in signing Wolfsburg midfielder Elvis Rexhbecaj. However, a deal didn’t materialise in the summer.

A graduate of the Wolfsburg academy, Elvis Rexhbecaj, 22, made his first-team debut for the club in January 2018. He was impressive last season despite mainly being used as a substitute. He played 24 Bundesliga games, starting only 13 of them, managing two goals and as many assists.

However, interestingly, the midfielder of Kosovan Albanian descent is yet to play a single game in the Bundesliga this season. He has been an unused substitute in the last six games, with manager Oliver Glasner preferring Joshua Guilavogui and Maxi Arnold in central midfield.

As Rexhbecaj continues to be overlooked by Wolfsburg manager Oliver Glasner, the January transfer window would be the perfect time for Norwich City to revive their interest and sign him.

It’s all doom and gloom at Norwich City, who find themselves rock bottom of the Premier League table. Regardless of some smart additions following promotion in the summer, the Canaries have lost nine games and are winless in their last seven.

Injuries have paid a big part in ransacking Daniel Farke’s squad but they are expected to do much better with the team they have. Additions are vital in January and having conceded 28 goals in 12 games, reinforcing the backline has to be Farke’s priority.

In Emi Buendia, Moritz Leitner, Kenny McLean, Mario Vrancic, Marco Stiepermann, Alex Tettey, Tom Trybull and Ibrahim Amadou, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that Norwich’s biggest strength lies in their midfield. But due to injuries to first-choice defenders, the likes of Tettey and Amadou have deputised in central defence in a couple of games this season.

Even if the Canaries aren’t light in the midfield department, it won’t do much harm if Farke signs a quality young midfielder with high potential. In that regard, Elvis Rexhbecaj would be a good fit at Carrow Road.

Rexhbecaj is a quality central midfielder, possessing good passing skills which help in dictating the tempo of the game from deeper positions. The 22-year-old reads the game well to make attack-breaking interceptions and win the ball back for his team.

Verdict

As Farke’s men have leaked a lot of goals in the Premier League, a player like Rexhbecaj would be perfect in front of their rearguard. Hence, making an offer for the Yugoslavia-born star does make a lot of sense. Thus, Norwich must go all out to sign Rexhbecaj in January.
