17 goals, 7 assists – Liverpool completing a quickfire deadline day move for this Bundesliga hotshot would be a masterstroke

Why Liverpool revive interest in Wout Weghorst?

Liverpool‘s front line of attack turned out to be the cornerstone of Jurgen Klopp’s successful run the last term.

The trio of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino has been a menace to the opponents since their formation, however, the form of the latter is quite concerning now.

Being the focal point of the attack, Firmino saw a huge decline in his goal-scoring rate in the previous season, regardless of his decent Copa America run.

Jurgen Klopp

The 28-year-old became exposed to injuries as well, leaving Klopp deprived of enough back-up options except Divock Origi.

Going forward, the Reds must rope in a new striker who can take the pressure off the Brazilian No.9 and at the same time, enhance the competition with Origi.

The Reds can make a call on Wolfsburg striker, and their former target, Wout Weghorst, who desired to make a move to Anfield earlier this year. (h/t Liverpool Echo)

Weghorst’s phenomenal form would benefit Liverpool

The 27-year-old took the Bundesliga by storm, racking up 17 goals and 7 assists and was the third joint-highest scorer in the league.

Before his switch to Germany, the Danish star was popular as a key player for AZ Alkmaar, with whom he splashed a handful of goals. It also helped with his debut with the Netherlands senior team last year.

Having a tall and sturdy build, Weghorst is a clinical finisher. An astonishing fact is that he was able to achieve the aforementioned numbers only with a meagre average of 2.1 shots per game and 1.1 key passes. There is no wonder he won 3.4 aerials per game, being such a tall figure.

His inclusion would ease the scoring burden off fellow forwards Mane and Salah.

Final Verdict

The Reds have a solid line-up in terms of the attack but adding a striker of higher quality like Weghorst would give the German manager a sigh of relief ahead of next season.

Citing his potential and fitness, the Dutch goal machine would be a safe bet for the Merseyside club.
