16 goals, 2 assists – Southampton beating Arsenal to sign this in-form Belgian would save them from relegation

Why Southampton should beat Arsenal to sign Leandro Trossard

According to a report from the Sun, Arsenal are interested in Genk winger Leandro Trossard. The Belgian, 23, has been in scintillating form in the Belgian top-flight this season, scoring 9 goals and providing 2 assists in 12 appearances. He has also shone in the Europa League, netting 7 goals in as many games.

Leandro Trossard signed a contract extension until May 2021, so prizing him away won’t be easy. Southampton have also shown interest in the jet-heeled winger and they should look to beat Arsenal for the player’s signature in January.

With one win this season and currently in the relegation zone, Southampton are struggling right now. The Saints are going nowhere at the moment and have already sacked manager Mark Hughes.

Southampton’s poor start to the 2018/19 Premier League campaign will only toughen calls for the board to invest in the playing squad this January. The Saints are under tremendous pressure following a poor season so far and they have to start churning points quickly.

But the Southampton board has to act in January as the current squad lacks the quality to survive in the Premier League. One area they must strengthen in January is the attack, which has scored just 9 goals in 14 games this campaign. It is a shocking return for a club which has decent attacking players.

They need a standard forward who can create and score goals aplenty to keep Southampton in the top-flight. That said, the Saints must hand Leandro Trossard an opportunity in the Premier League.

Leandro Trossard has come up through Genk’s youth ranks having joined in 2010, and has now become one of the top young stars of Belgian football. He has been in red-hot form this season in Belgium, creating opportunities, assisting and scoring goals for fun.

Primarily a winger, the 23-year-old is also capable of playing in central midfield or as a second striker, though his preferred position is on the left flank. Standing at 5ft 8in, Trossard in a jet-heeled winger blessed with exceptional close control and brilliant technique.

He not only excels in finishing off moves but also has the ability to link up effectively with his teammates. The Belgian loves to exploit the pockets of spaces behind the defenders and is a player who is tricky to mark.

Southampton are short on the kind of natural width and raw pace that Trossard could offer them, and with such a fine goalscoring form to boast of, the Saints must do everything to sign the diminutive Belgian in the New Year as he might help them avoid the drop this season.
