11 goals, 9 assists – This World Cup finalist could be Man United’s answer to their right-wing problems

Why Manchester United should sign Ivan Perisic

Premier League giants Manchester United are reportedly in “advanced talks” with Inter Milan to sign Croatian star Ivan Perisic.

Perisic, 29, played a crucial role in ending England’s World Cup hopes by scoring one and setting up the other in Croatia’s 2-1 semi-final victory. He also scored against France last night to give his country some hope of winning the World Cup but they eventually lost 4-2.

The Red Devils have continuously been linked with a move for the Inter Milan winger in recent windows, with the winger having dominated much of last summer’s transfer gossip. It is no secret that United manager Jose Mourinho is fond of the Croatian ace, who scored 11 goals in Serie A as the Inter finished 4th last term.

United had already made a few signings in the summer transfer window. They have signed Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk to bolster their midfield, while Lee Grant has arrived from Stoke City to add depth between the posts, allowing Joel Pereira to go out on loan and earn some much-needed playing time.

Diogo Dalot has also joined United from FC Porto, a long-term replacement for the ageing Antonio Valencia.

One of the areas Mourinho should try to solve is the right-wing dilemma. They broke the bank for Alexis Sanchez during the January transfer window but the Chilean is more suited playing on the left-wing or behind the striker.

Neither Marcus Rashford nor Anthony Martial can play on the right-wing, however, the latter could even depart Old Trafford before the season starts, as far as the reports are concerned.

So, adding a traditional proven winger could be a smart move for United. In that case, there is no better proven, traditional winger than Perisic in Europe. Perisic has confirmed his status as a top quality forward during the World Cup, putting in excellent displays throughout the campaign. He scored 11 goals and provided 9 assists this past season.

Perisic is renowned for his blistering pace and crossing abilities with both the feet. He is equally strong on both feet, with his breathtaking runs often ending with quality end product whilst his work-rate is unmatched by the majority of attacking players.

The Croat is a workhorse and with the kind of manager that Mourinho is, they could form a strong connection between each other.

The Inter Milan man would certainly add pace and dynamism to United’s ranks and provide a very different dimension to their attack. His speed and skills can terrorise opponents, while he also plays with a level of physicality that makes him a perfect fit for the Premier League. Moreover, Perisic is a versatile player and is currently playing at the peak of his powers.

The ex-Dortmund flyer is undoubtedly the player Mourinho has lacked at Old Trafford. With his sizzling World Cup displays, Perisic has added millions to his transfer value but that should not dampen United’s hopes of getting their man.

It is the perfect time for the Red Devils to land Perisic even if it means paying over the odds.
