Kylian Mbappe or Alexandre Lacazette: Who Should Arsenal Target This Summer?

Arsene Wenger is now a busy man as he has to work harder than normal to improve his squad at the Emirates and help them win some silverware next season in a campaign where they will only play in the second tier of European football. However, this has not stopped the Gunners from scouting the best players in Europe and two such players constantly linked (Telegraph) with a move to London are AS Monaco’s £100 million rated Kylian Mbappe and Lyon’s £60 million rated Alexandre Lacazette.

While the former could cost almost double what the latter will, both have different styles of play and will add different flavours to the club next season. So who should Arsenal spend on this summer?

Both players were in tremendous form in the French league last season. With 27 goals and 3 assists to his name, Lacazette is a genuine goal scorer – just the kind of a player who Arsenal have been looking for, for more than a year now. However, Mbappe, who is just 18, has been a revelation, picking up 15 goals and 8 assists in his first full season with the Monaco senior side.

The 26-year old Lacazette has already established himself as one of the best in the world in front of goal and was more effective with his passing, accumulating a passing accuracy of 78% last season. Mbappe was not bad either, with an accuracy of 74%. However, the teenager created just 31 chances, threading 23 key passes, compared to the 46 chances created and 43 key passes by Lacazette. As a matter of fact, Lacazette triumphs in these numbers when compared to even the best in the country.

Lacazette had a successful take-on rate of 69.70% which is impressive. Mbappe found it hard to mark all season and he has a take-on success of 47.37%. The Lyon man won more aerial duels, more total duels, and more fouls than the Monaco boy and was better than the 18-year old in almost every aspect of the game.

He could cost just around £60m and reports suggest that lack of Champions League football should not be a problem for Arsenal. He is a far better option for Arsenal, who need established stars rather than skillful youngsters to get back to their best next season.

Mbappe will cost more than Lacazette for sure and at 18, might take time to settle in at the Emirates. Arsenal cannot afford to give any player such time and should do all it takes to land Lacazette this summer.
